18 year old drinkers?  College presidents push for it.

18 year olds drinking.

It’s not the kids pushing it. It’s the college Presidents.  100 of them around the country are pushing for the drinking age to be changed to 18.

They say the mixture of students allowed to drink and not allowed to, on college campuses leads to a lot of behind closed doors alchohol abuse.

They believe it makes the drinking problem worse on college campuses and that everyone should be allowed to drink at 18, to bring it all out in the open.

So what do you think?  Looking for your comments.  And vote in my CW Blogpoll.

College students under 21 are drinking.  This would be one less thing the colleges would have to worry about.

WHEN YOU TURN 18 AND HEAD TO COLLEGE YOU SHOULD BE A ALLOWED TO DRINK   THEY DO IT ANYWAY SO WHY NOT LET THEM.

Just because kids are already drinking does not mean the drinking age should be lowered.  Would the same reasoning apply to murder or shoplifting?  People go ahead and do those things when it’s against the law, so let’s just make it legal so everyone will be happy.  18 year olds are not mature enough to handle the responsibility of drinking.  Most 21 year olds can’t and, truth be known, there are many people of all ages who do not drink responsibly.  We don’t need to add to that problem.

I believe if a person is old enough and mature enough to sign up for the army, they should be old enough to drink. 21 is a rediculous age when you can go off and fight for your country at 18. A person can legally carry a gun and shoot people, but can’t have a beer….how much sense does that make? Not a whole lot to me!

I have mixed feelings about this, as , much like many other things, this is a maturity thing - not an age thing.  I totally feel that if a child is old enough to fight in a war, he/she is old enough to drink. However, there are many, many very immature 18 year olds that would drive, drink, kill, and die….There is really no right or wrong answer to this since there is no way to judge maturity level on issues like this, but the college presidents’ reasonings for this is wrong!

All kids experiment with alcohol. Should we lower the age where you can buy it? No, if we do that they might as well lower the age for everything else. If we give on one we will eventually have to give on others. Should we legalize pot, and other drugs? I think it would just cause other people to start pushing for other things to have lowered ages and other issues we don’t want to come to light. So no I think 21 is the right age and let’s get real there is 21 yr olds and older out there not mature enough to handle drinking much less 18 yr olds.

O.K., let’s see if I’ve got this straight.  They can have sex at 16, but they can’t talk about it till they’re 18.  They can join the military at 18, but they can’t buy beer till they’re 21.  Is that how it works?  We can sign for a 14 year old to GET MARRIED, but they will have to wait 7 years for the toast.  It’s entirely possible that we aren’t thinking this through. There needs to be AN AGE…one of them…at which a person is legally, and in all ways, an adult, and I think 18 is a good choice because it’s the age when most young people finish high school and head into real life, in one way or another.  Lower the drinking age to 18, raise the legal age to marry to 18, and consider everyone under 18 to be a minor when sexual activity is on the table.  How’s that for a plan?

...and YES, people under 18 should still be considered minors when sexual activiy is somewhere other than on the table!

When we turn 18 we get all the rights but one-the right to legally drink. That is way messed up. If we can adopt a kid we can drink its that simple. You are totally ok with us going to war and maybe getting PDSD but get all upset when we want a drink. Lets face it either give us all the rights or wait til we are 21.
