Tonight’s epsiode was full of the unexpected. Mocktails are being served during cocktail hour at the Gilmore house. Richard is padding around in a robe. Paris is practicing yoga….and this was just the beginning!
So Lorelai spent the episode telling her family that she had broken up with Christopher. Somehow, maybe because of all the other breakup announcements she has made over the years (Max, Luke, the other guy who had worked with her Dad) it just didn’t seem that critical. Rory handled it well, almost force-feeding us, the audience, that we should agree with her that it was exciting at first, but never seemed ‘quite right.’ Ohhh, so that’s what all those episodes of showing Christopher sweeping Lorelai off her feet were for: to show that it wasn’t quite right. She also told her mom, waiting of course until the vodka and scotch came out of hiding (remember its now a dry Gilmore house) and she felt brave enough. The unexpected was that Emily was really quite motherly about it. Telling Lorelai (as sad as it was to hear) that she was like a kayak; she could do very well on her own—she didn’t need a husband to help her get through life. The motherly pat on the shoulder was maybe a bit much coming from Frau Gilmore, but since I heard the distinct note of a slur, I will accept it as believable.
Back at Yale—or maybe New York (geez its tough to tell anymore) Rory was spoiling Logan on his birthday. Now 25 seems awfully old for a guy who just graduated the spring before—maybe he was in the 7 year graduation program at Yale? But nonetheless, pinatas, pin the tale on the moose, and cake were involved and it was cute. Unexpectedly, Mitchum calls and wants to take the both of them to a birthday dinner. During the dinner he is cordial, full of flattery, and even nice. As that is very weird for Mitchum, I was not surprised when he cornered Rory and thanked her for her masterful molding of his young heir. He even suggested that Rory and he should meet to plan his future. Of course, he did mention several different papers—including overseas, and if I was young Rory I think I might just take him up on his offer and sail off to Europe with my handsome boyfriend.
Speaking of the handsome boyfriend, the dreaded phone call came to tell him that his investment was a failure. I have to admit that it broke my heart to watch Logan, who had just heard that news, get off the phone and quietly play along with Rory who is oblivious to his problems….it does kind of show a more loving, mature Logan than we have seen before. Now we just have to see how he handles losing his fortune.
What did you think? Are you wondering why the narrator said that next episode Lane will have her “baby” singular? And will Lorelai hold off men for a while or will she find her way back to Luke?
