Gospel magazine pulled from shelves - BLOGPOLL
By Amy Wood
Wednesday, September 24, 2008
Lifeway stores, run by the Southern Baptist convention, pulled a gospel magazine from store shelves, because of the women on the cover.
They are women preachers, and the Southern Baptist Convention believes women should not be in the pulpit.
The stores took the magazine off store shelves, but if they have copies left, customers can request them.

Yes I think Women should be able to..After all we can argue any point of life ...Just as a man can…And women have long been leaders of house(homes and Families)...And we did a good job…And guess what every man has a women as a mother as well…
My father was always strongly against women in the pulpit. My sisters and I grew up with a strict Baptist father and mother. So, while I don’t know why my dad felt as strongly as he did, I have been unable to shake his thoughts and beliefs on this subject.
I attend a church that is pastored by a woman. She is one of the finest preachers I have ever heard and provides excellent spiritual guidance to the congregation. I truly believe that God calls women to such positions of leadership and that the Bible allows it. The verses that most use to prohibit women in the pulpit have been taken out of context and misused.
Let me pose the question this way? Which holds more weight?
Paul’s words from 1 Cor. 14:34 (KJV) - “Let your women keep silence in the churches”
or
The example of Jesus, who included women among his closest students (Mary, Martha, Mary Magdalene, etc.), gave women far more respect than typical in their day (the Samaritan woman at the well, the adulterous woman, the widow at the offering box), and even appeared first to women (Mary Magdalene & others) at the Resurrection, giving them the “Good News” to share with the male apostles.
I started doing some research, but then again, religion is such a touchy subject to so many. most of us have been tought by our parents with their religion sometimes passed down to them. i was raised Greek, but at a young age of 19, i started to look into many other religions. I have found, it’s easier not to get to deep talking to others about it, why? well i think you all know that answer :). we all have the freedom to choose what we believe in. it would be interesting tho, if some people would step out of their comfort zone and really do some research on thier own.
There is one thing that caught my attention a few years back when i was researching, is the book of “Jasher” which for one reason or another was not added to the books of the bible. in this book,it is increasingly apparent, the ultimate signicance of Miriam, in this book it is said she is the constant adviser to moses and Aaron and is greatly revered by the Israelites, to whom she is clearly a cultural leader. maybe this is the reason for this to be excluded, for it is quite unlike the familiar biblical books of the old testament in it’s portrayal of women.
so in my opinion i think women have every right same as a man to be in the pulpit if they so choose to.
It is right there in the bible—women are to keep silent in church. Women were not meant to be heads of the church (preachers, pastors, revs or whatever you want to call it.) We take too lightly God’s commands and twist them to fit our opinions. He said it in His Word.
And as for the ‘books left out of the bible comment’- the bible is God’s COMPLETE Word. HE is perfect - therefore His Word is perfect.
Yes, we all have freedom of religion and can believe what we want to believe, I wonder what everyone who is believing what they want to instead of God’s true Word will think and say when they stand before our Lord and Savior??? Heaven or Hell..we are all going to one of them, and if we disagree with His Word, Hell will be your final destination…
I find it insulting to seriously discuss whether or not the God who spoke through a donkey can speak through a woman. I’m trying to keep in mind that the donkey got in trouble, too.
Does a woman have a ministry in the church? Here’s the answer straight from the bible
(Gal.3.28) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Again man makes up the rules as he goes, instead of taking straight from the word of God. (Joel 2:28 - 29) And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams and young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the hand maids in those days will I pour out my spirit. I will listen to a woman as much as I would listen to a man preaching the gospel. They treated those magazines as if they were porn. Put them back on the shelves and let consumers decide. Men are you afraid, this is becoming a womans world and all of you are just squirrels trying to get a nut. what happened to freedom of the press and speech Pleeeease next topic
one more thing Paul was not referring to women ministering in church, but rather the annoying interruptions in the meeting, made by women who were asking their husbands to explain to them what was being discussed in the meetings. It was not Paul intentions to forbid from ministering under the direction of the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul encouraged women to prophesy and wrote instructions in his epistle for their attire when so engaged. Today, both men and women can be anointed of God in all types of utterance so the Church might be edified please read (Tim.2:12)

I think the fact that this is even an issue speaks volumes at how far this country of Christians have to go. The Bible was written by men and revised many times by the Catholic Church and other men who wanted to keep control of their constituents and power. Unfortunately this power still injects itself into political and cultural situations as illustrated by this incident. Luckily we do live in a free country and in this situation we can at the least be unaffected by not allowing this group of people to control what we read and think.
I see the Baptist Taliban is alive and well!
The early Christians met in homes, and that is the woman’s traditional domain. It seems that as soon as men figured out that there was money to be made in religion, they shouldered in and took over. They won’t give up without a fight.
C’mon people! After reading this, I can see that this country is full speed ahead - destination HELL. This is not about women’s rights! This is about the Bible - the divine and inspired Word of God - not some doctored up by men or women either for that matter -‘book’ that is a meaningless fairy tale. THIS IS GOD’S WORD!
The statement one of you made that said, “The Bible was written by men and revised many times by the Catholic Church and other men who wanted to keep control of their constituents and power.” says to me that you do not believe in GOD’S WORD. HE knew what would be in the Bible - exactly what He wanted us to know. HE is all powerful - HE is God. So to say that the Bible is just a bunch if men getting together revising it for themselves us absolutely disbelief in our Lord and Savior.
Yes, women can witness,be the voice of God. Yes, women can be baptized with the Holy Spirit, talk in tongues (that is probably opening up a whole new can of worms with some of you disbelievers.) But women are not intended to be the main speaker of the church. Get over your women’s rights or all of you are going to end up with a grim eternity!
Linda, are you actually suggesting that being a feminist will cause you to got to hell? I find it curious that, respecting the Bible as you do, you seem to believe that people go to hell for some reason other than failure to accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior. That is, after all, what YOUR BIBLE teaches. We, as Christians, tend to make Christianity very unappealing to non-Christians but telling them that they will go to hell for disagreeing with us. That is a lie, straight out of the pit of…
Thank you Ms.Debbie I couldn’t have said it better myself. But someone is being very judgmental. (James 4:11,16, 17) My brothers and sisters, don’t speak against one another. Anyone who speaks against another believer speaks against the law. And anyone who judges another believer judges the law. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it. Instead, you are acting as if you were its judge. (16) As it is, you are proud. You brag about it. That kind of bragging is evil. (17) So when you know the good things you should do and don’t do them, you sin. Are these women of God Believers and should we judge them. Only comment if you are a true follower of Gods written word
P.S Thank you Ms Annette her comment confused me because My bible/scriptures says something totally different
This is why i said religion is a touchy subject. you always get those kind of responses.
most people know what the bible says, i mean it’s been around a long time, most have read it, or just listen to what they are told on sunday. instead of having a nice talk, many get angry and say mean spirited things that is agenst their own teachings.
in my research in the past 5 years, i have learned something shocking. there were writings found, called the Sumerian Tablets.
What i learned basicly from reading the Sumerian tablets by a few different translators is what i was taught in 2nd grade, My teacher lined up the class, then wrote something down on paper, whispered it to the first student, by the time it got to the last student, it wasn’t the samething at all.
LOL…out of the mouths of babes…
I am bewildered at how personal this topic has become. First of all, I am right about the revisions of the Bible. All of the writings have been translated many times, some were destroyed, others were omitted, and some were just altered. More to the point, there is much confusion between being spiritual and being religious. When religious dogma interferes with the spiritual growth of any person or group of persons and denies access to any worthwhile endeavor through discrimination then the purpose of being “religious” is lost. I cannot imagine Jesus ever denying anyone the opportunity to share their beliefs and truths and I cannot imagine a God who would place one child over another based upon their sex. God created us all and if He/She is perfect love then we are all equal. Why should anyone decide that you, the person next door, or me are not qualified to preach and why should anyone be denied the right to read about those who are sharing their faith and their truths?
NO, we are not supposed to speak against one another OR judge, however, GOd says to go and tell. If we don’t we are in disobedience of His Word. Therefore, it is absolutely OK to tell people that, if they disagree with the Word of God, they are going to hell…yes, it is….
Y’all are forgetting that GOD INSPIRED THE BIBLE. If you all think it is inaccurate, incomplete, chnaged because of stories passed down from person to person, or whatever it is you believe, why do you read it? why do you study it? why have it at all? God is perfect. His will is perfect. His Word is perfect. God let what He wanted into the Bible. It is perfect how He intended it to be. If we disagree with that, we are saying 1. God is not perfect (If he was perfect, wouldn’t the Bible be also?) 2. God is not in control. (He gave us the Bible to use as a guide for life. He has in it what He wants us to know.) It is troubling to me that when others disagree with the Word of God, they get offended by one who is speaking the truth about it. We could go on for hours with this debate. THe truth is everyone is going to believe what they believe. AND I will stand and say right now to those of you who believe the bible is incorrect, incomplete, or whatever - I will pray for you He is perfect!
AND if we are christians and we have truly accepted Christ, we believe the bible. Just because one says they have Jesus and goes to church and professes christianity doesn’t mean they are going to heaven. We must truly have Jesus to go there regardless of what we do, otherwise we will be burning in hell.
It seems there are those that use the words, “you will burn in hell” very loosely. I distinctly remember the Bible stating that we are not to judge. That is left up to God Himself. I also remember the Bible stating, “Go ye and teach the nation.” It does NOT say “Go ye men and teach the nation”. The Bible was translated from Hebrew to German by Martin Luther in the 1500s, who was a Catholic Priest, who was excommunicated because he questioned the church charging the people money to be forgiven. He said that wasn’t how he interpreted what God had said in the Bible. If you want to learn a bit about the Reformation and how other faiths, watch the movie “Luther”.
Things changed after Jesus died to save all of us sinners. There are scriptures in the new testament that replace some of the scriptures in the old. But one thing remains, you do not get to Heaven by good deeds. It is by God’s unconditional love. A mass murderer can get to Heaven if he is right with God before he breathes his last breath, so I doubt if a female minister is going to go anywhere near hell as long as she is teaching the nation about God’s love.
My final words..
If we do not accept Jesus Christ as our personal SAVIOR we will BURN IN HELL and people need to realize that HELL is REAL. Nothing we do other than accept HIM that will get us into Heaven. Try works and you will go to hell. There will be one person who is the ‘best sinner in hell.” What I mean by that is there will be one of the best people that ever walked the Earth - helping others in every way, giving to the poor, taking in the homeless, never doing a vile thing to anyone - but because they never accepted Jesus Christ, they WILL go to Hell. Hell needs to be talked about instead of being kept silent as some denominations do.I am utterly offended by some of today’s preachers that preach love and joy and wonderfulness all the time. I think about Joel Osteen. C’mon! People, Christians and non-Christians alone, need the salvation message regularly. Once saved is NOT always saved (uh oh. I just stepped on someone’s toes with that.) I am reminded of Paul when he said, “I die daily.”
I was not going to respond again but I cannot let this stand. There are too many girls or young women who may be searching or looking for direction in pursuing their goals. The women profiled in the magazine may provide guidance, advice, and encouragement to follow dreams and provide a service. The qualities most needed in ministers include the abilities to articulate, empathize, educate, and to be intuitive which are all major attributes of women generally speaking. Not only should women be allowed to preach, more churches should seek out women who are interested in preaching and making ministry their profession. It is time for everyone to get a grip and practice what they preach in or out of the pulpit.
divadee has it right- the women were interrupting the meeting by asking their husbands questions.
They were asked to keep silent and wait until they were at home with their husbands to ask for an explanation if they didn’t understand and it doesn’t say for women not to be leaders as Linda says.
I also agree with Evilpony - If people would research on their own instead of being spoon fed by their pastors, they might learn that some of the things they’ve been taught all these years are just tradition and have no scriptural basis at all.
Also another comment to Linda- I can hear the pentecostal christian in your writings.
You referenced the commands of God. If you’ll do some research on your own, you’ll find out that almost every single Christian denomination today is breaking one of the 10 commandments every single week and excuses it as okay because of traditions of man.
The Bible says that sin is the transgression of the law which means breaking the law so if one breaks the law, one commits sin. Sin is sin and no sin is bigger than another so if one breaks one of the least of the commandments and teaches men to do so…............just look it up…....so if you want to quote the commandments, you need to realize that most Christian churches teach that it is okay to break the 4th commandment which says to Remember the Sabbath Day which is Saturday - not Sunday - the day of the Sun God. look it up in the History books - the Catholic Church changed this way back when and modern religions follow it out of tradition. There is no scriptural authority for the observance of Sunday.
