Top Model Cycle 9 Premiere: The Girls Go Cruisin’

By Edie Rowland
Thursday, September 20, 2007

I’m baaaack!  (I know - that’s a way overused cliche, but appropriate, I think.)

It’s the premiere of the 9th cycle of Top Model.  Who knew back when the show premiered on UPN in May ‘03 that it would grow to what it is today?  Since the premiere of Cycle 1…

- Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond have gone off the air.
- The Catholic Church has a new pope.
- Three former U.S. Presidents have died.
- Britney Spears has gotten married and divorced twice.
- Dan Rather has been replaced by Katie Couric.
- The Red Sox and White Sox have won the World Series.

But I digress.  It’s on to a new cycle with new girls and I have to say, this looks like an interesting group.  The first episode trimmed the 33 semi-finalists down to 13 while the girls were cruising the Carribean.  (Nice plug for Royal Carribean Cruiseline.)  I’m going on a cruise in October, so it got me pretty excited for my trip.  (Aren’t you jealous?)

Just some random thoughts about the first episode:

My favorites so far, I think, are Saleisha, Lisa, and Chantal, although I really liked most of the girls I saw.  When I saw Lisa crying while they were calling out the names of the 13 finalists, I was so glad she made it.

I really don’t like Ebony.  And, sadly, I didn’t even feel sorry for her when she cried at panel, because I don’t think having a hard life is an excuse to be nasty to everyone.  She is very beautiful, but I just don’t understand girls who think that being pretty and photogenic and good at runway are the only requirements for being a model.  I would think being sociable and getting along with people would be high on the list, too.  I hope that the competition will change her attitude.

I felt really sorry for Heather, who has a mild form of autism (I can’t remember the exact name for her condition), and I worry about her as the competition goes on.  It’s not really so much the challenges, but how she’ll do around the other girls.  I feel like she’s going to have to endure some ribbing from them - we all know how nasty those girls can be sometimes - and that’s going to be hard to watch.

I really liked Jennifer from Massachusetts and wish she had made it further.  Her Bostonian accent made me think of the one and only time I visited the city.  (“I’m a bahtendah.”)  I love Boston!  Especially Fenway.  Okay, so visiting the oldest church in America and the graveyard where Paul Revere is buried was cool, too.  But Fenway is Fenway!

(Note: In case you don’t know what Fenway is, it’s the ballpark where the Boston Red Sox play.  It’s one of the oldest ballparks in baseball and I love visiting ballparks - hence the excitement.)

I’m so excited about sharing this new cycle of Top Model with you and I hope you’ll check into CarolinasCW.com every week to read my blog.  Let me know your thoughts on this cycle.  Who are your favorites?  Who do you already not like?  Who do you think is the frontrunner?

Thanks for tuning in and I’ll see ya next week!
