Top Model: Makeovers

By Edie Rowland

My name is Edie and I hate Wal-Mart.  There, I said it.  How can a girl raised in Cowpens, SC hate Wal-Mart?  I’m not sure how the loathing started, but Wal-Mart represents two of the things I hate about shopping (yes, I hate shopping, too): crowds and clutter.  Although, they do have bargains, which I do like.  (I never buy anything at regular price and I’m a bit of a...okay, a major cheapskate.) That’s pretty much why I still shop there.  Okay, so that’s hypocritical, I guess.  Wal-Mart and I have a love/hate relationship.  I complain about going there, but I don’t think I could live without it.*

Anyway, all that being said, I was shocked and rather pleasantly surprised that Wal-Mart is now on the Top Model train.  Who knew?  I guess Kim should have stuck around for another week, huh?  This seemed to be more her speed than the $500 shorts.  For $500 at Wal-Mart, you could buy a whole wardrobe. For your family. Twice.  (On a side note, who knew there was a Wal-Mart in NYC?)

I really want to like Fatima, but I keep finding myself telling her to keep her mouth shut.  I really didn’t like Allison at all in this episode - didn’t realize she was so cocky - but the comment Fatima made to her was totally uncalled for.  I hope she’ll start thinking before she speaks instead of sticking her foot in her mouth all the time.

As far as the makeovers go, most of them were pretty good.  Just to give you my detailed assessment:

- I think Anya’s hair color makes her nose look bigger.  Not sure how, but it just looks that way to me.

- I liked Whitney’s dark hair better.  It made her look more exotic and brought out her eyes more.  I do like long hair on her, however.

- Aimee looks GREAT with red hair.  Honestly, I haven’t liked many red hair makeovers on Top Model, but they did a great job on her color.

- What on God’s beautiful green earth did they do to Marvita?  What is that?  Horsetail?  Ew.  Ew ew ew. (I guess you can tell I don’t like it.) Speaking of Marvita, though, she’s growing on me.  Just shows you have to give somebody a chance.

- Lauren looks fantastic!!  She looks so girly and feminine!  This is exactly what they needed to do for her.

- Katarzyna looks great, but not much different.  She looked pretty much perfect before.

- Claire looks surprisingly good.  I wouldn’t have thought I’d like the shaved head or platinum blonde on her, but it works.  Anybody else think she looks like Julia Stiles?

- Fatima looks amazing.  Her face was already beautiful and with that long, flowing hair, she is absolutely stunning.  It made me kind of mad when Allison was criticizing her for crying during her makeover, but I’m willing to bet that Allison has never had hair sewn into her head.

- Speaking of Allison, her hair color ended up looking good, too (although she seemed to not know how to fix it) - it was one of the more dramatic makeovers.

- I like Dominique’s shorter hair, but it looked better at the photo shoot than at panel - and it is a little soccer mom-ish.  Maybe the hair color Tyra talked about giving her will make it look better.

- I don’t like Stacey-Ann’s hair at all.  I know they are trying to bring out her beautiful bone structure in her face, but I just didn’t like it on her.

- Amis was just okay, but at least she doesn’t look like Lisa from Cycle 5 anymore.

I was impressed that Elle MacPherson showed up on this episode.  I haven’t seen many of the famous supermodels (other than those that were judges) be on the show.  She seems like a very down-to-earth kind of person.  I wasn’t really wowed by the photo shoot, but some of the girls at least turned out good photos.  I felt so sorry for Dominique.  She’s one of my favorites and I hope she’s able to give a good performance next week.  I was SO glad Allison went home instead of her, but you could really tell how much Allison wanted it when she got eliminated.

So next week, there’s a catfight on Top Model.  And, in other news, the sun will rise tomorrow, France is in Europe, and Donald Trump is rich.

I wanted to take time to thank each of you who came to our ANTM open casting call at Westgate Mall last Saturday.  We had more than 200 beautiful young women show up, which made it our most successful casting call yet.  Hopefully, we’ll be seeing some of you again in Cycle 11!

Let me know what YOU think of the makeovers!  Are you starting to figure out who the favorite is?  Tell me about it and I’ll see you guys next week!

I didn’t see the show but I finally read your blog.  Impressive.  I share your views with Walmart, but you already knew that.

This is off the subject but… The homeless “girls” featured on the first photo shoot were actually transgendered boys.  I saw a documentary on them on MSN (prior to the top model episode).  I was just wondering if anyone else realized this.
