Top Model: The Girl Who Gets Thrown in the Pool

I actually felt sorry for Renee at one point in this episode.  In fact, she almost brought tears to my eyes.  (What can I say?  I’m a pretty sensitive person.)  At the same time, she did something in the episode that made me a little angry with her as well.

When they brought Melrose from Cycle 7 in at the beginning of the episode, I looked at her and thought about how terrible everybody thought she was when she was on the show and how much I wanted Caridee to beat her.  Now that we’ve all been introduced to Renee, Melrose doesn’t seem so bad.  I must have missed the clip that they showed where she explained that her name was short for Melissa Rose.  Kind of interesting.  Anyway, when the girls were asked by Melrose and Twiggy (whose real name is Leslie Hornby) to come up with a new, memorable model name, the choices were, um…interesting.  Two of the dumbest were Sarah’s (Moe? Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck!) and Renee’s (Nayien - sounds like a brand of bottled water).  But the worst was Dionne’s.  Wholahay?  Wholawhat?  Sounded like one of those made-up words people use like thingamabob, doohickey, or whatchmacallit.  Remember Whatchamacallit candy bars?  Do they make those anymore?  They used to sell them in the cafeteria at my school when I was kid.  Now kids have to eat raisins and carrot sticks in school.  And wear helmets when they ride their bikes.

Anyway, they all went to a party that featured celebrities like 50 Cent, Paris Hilton, and Nicole Richie.  Remember her dad?  My favorite song of his was “Hello.”  Anyway, sorry for digressing again.  I kept cringing watching Jael talk to 50 Cent.  He was obviously annoyed by her and even told her to go away, and she just didn’t get it.  I like Jael and felt bad for her.  And when he pushed her into the pool - TWICE - I thought she’d get the hint.  But she didn’t.

Okay, here is what Renee did that made me mad.  She was talking to Nicole Richie at the party and told her that she hated the other girls.  She singled Jael out and said that was the one she hated.  Nicole went and told Jael what she said.  Nicole couldn’t remember Renee’s name, but Jael knew who she was talking about.  Then back at the house, Jael asked Renee about it and she lied through her teeth, saying something about how Nicole asked who in the house was the craziest and she said it was Jael.  Um…do you smell smoke, Renee?  I think it’s because your pants are on fire!  She does realize that it was all caught on tape, right?

The time I felt sorry for Renee was when all the girls had a chit-chat session with Tyra and they all expressed their frustration with Renee.  Renee pointed out that she was not there to make friends.  Well, that’s all well and good, but that doesn’t mean you have to deliberately set out to make enemies, which seems to be the case.  When Renee started talking about how sorry she was for what she’d done and how it was a defense mechanism because she had been hurt in the past, I kind of felt some sympathy.  I mean, I’m not one who thinks people should use the difficulties in their lives as an excuse to hurt others, but it seemed to me that Renee is just afraid to get close to people, so she deliberately puts up barriers between her and others.  I’m no psychologist, but it seems that way.

The photos this week were of different emotions that the girls chose themselves.  Everyone did pretty well except Sarah, who posed too much.  That’s why she ended up going home.  It was kind of sad, but I would rather it be her than Whitney.  By the way, I’m so glad they are going to do something about Brittany’s hair!  And I’m anxious to see how Renee acts from this point, now that she’s confronted her attitude and apologized.  I hope the other girls will give her another chance.  I think everybody deserves that.  See ya next week!
