Top Model: The Girls Who Go Down Under

Right off the bat, I have to tell you guys - they put Whatchamacallit candy bars in the vending machine downstairs! I haven’t bought one yet, but I might just have to so I can reminisce about my childhood.
I also need to mention that I really see a change in Renee in the last couple of weeks. Not only does she seem to be getting along better with the other girls, but she seems happier and smiles a lot more. I’m really glad. Nobody should be miserable, much less spread that misery to others.
Before the girls found out that they were headed to their international destination, April Wilkner from cycle 2 came to show them about interviewing. April was probably my favorite from that cycle, so I’m glad to see her succeeding. Jaslene said, “I want to talk good.” Good start, Jas.
The interviewing lessons were interesting, but when Jael and Dionne were interviewing each other, it was pretty confrontational. Later on, the girls were chilling in the pool and Jael went topless. If I were the other girls, she would be swimming alone. I like Jael - her quirkiness and all - but I just can’t see her being a Top Model.
I guess we all knew from the title that the girls were going to Australia. They had to learn to use Aussie slang while they interviewed people on the street in Sydney, which I thought was kind of dumb. I mean, if some northerner came down here trying to imitate a southerner while they interviewed people, it would just come off as making fun. I think the challenge would have been a lot better if they didn’t have to insert Aussie slang, because they all started making stuff up just so they could use as many slang terms as possible and it just sounded stupid. The challenge winner gets to be a correspondent for The Tyra Banks Show (weekdays at 6:00PM on WYCW!). Judging from the video I saw, none of them really stood out, but they revealed at the end, of course, that Natasha won. So she’ll get to be on The Tyra Banks Show (weekdays at 6:00PM on WYCW!). I’m proud of Natasha because I never would have guessed that she would be the one to win.
I felt really sorry for Brittany at the Cover Girl commercial shoot. Apparently she has short-term memory problems because she was hit by a car five years ago. They got onto her because she got frustrated and emotional and told her she needed to adapt, but I’d like to see any of the judges memorize a script in 30 minutes - with or without short-term memory problems.
The apartment they are staying in is awesome! Remember when the girls from cycle 3 went to Tokyo? They had to sleep in those tight spaces that looked kind of like bunkbeds in a closet. Doesn’t seem quite fair compared to the lush fabulousness of their quarters in Sydney.
Going into panel, I just knew Jael had to be the one going home - and I knew I would be mad if it was Brittany instead of her. Brittany did make her first appearance in the bottom two, but the judges finally sent Jael home. This I must say, with Jael AND Sanjaya going home, reality television will not be the same next week. (Not that I watch that other show or anything.)
On a more serious note, I guess we all found out this week how insignificant Top Model and other TV shows are in comparison to what’s really happening in the world. The REAL reality is that there are 33 grieving families and a campus full of students, faculty, staff and administrators whose lives will never be the same. My prayers are with them. Go Hokies!

COMMENTS
I agree with your last statement about the Va. Tech issue.
At the same time, I kinda appreciate the opportunity to “escape” to the occassional silliness that a show like this can provide when so much horror is going on in the world.
I absolutely agree, Eugene. We do need an escape from the real world sometimes. Thanks for your comments!
