What on earth is Twitter, TVAMY?

“What you’re saying” is a new interactive segment I’m doing on Channel 7’s new 7 pm newscast.  It airs about 20 minutes into the show, and gives me an opportunity to track what you are posting to WSPA.com and on all the social networks.

Most people have heard of Facebook, or MySpace.  But Twitter?  What on earth is that?

It’s bascially micro-blogging.  Little short messages, about the things you are seeing, and the things you are doing during the day.

It’s becoming a big deal and one of the best ways to get information in a breaking news situation, both for journalists and the general public.

Read the way the Chicago Tribune used Twitter during Hurricane Gustav.

And over the weekend one of the anchors on CNN took Twitter mainstream, using viewer tweets (messages sent on Twitter)  on air.

Many people also use twitter, to send out messages to their followers (people who sign up to get your twitter messages) about the latest blog they posted.

One of the most enjoyable Twitter explanations I’ve read comes from a blog posted by someone I follow on Twitter.  Chris Lewis shares a conversation you might have about Twitter.  He writes

ME: Twitter.

You: What’s that?

Me: It’s really cool!  It answers the question “What are you doing right now?” in 140 characters or less!

You: Sounds boring.

Me: That’s because you’re a nerd!  It’s really fun to “follow” a group of friends and get the 411 that you have to keep on the DL.  Know what I mean?

You: What?

Read the rest of the Chris Lewis blog.

So do you Twitter? If so why? If not, why not?

Look forward to connecting with you online.

You can find me on Twitter as TVAMY

‘What your saying’ should be ‘What you’re saying’ - FYI
