Smoking Ban In Greenville - What’s the point?

By Amy Wood
Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Greenville passes a smoking ban, not only can you not smoke in bars and restaurants and public buildings, but you can’t smoke near public entrances or at pubic events.

Now weeks into it, there’s been only ONE warning ticket written and when our CW cameras roamed through Greenville we repeatedly found smokers out enjoying their habit, without any consequences.

When the CW asked the cops why they weren’t enforcing it, they said they have more important things to do.  And don’t they?

Would you rather police focus on fighting crime?  And if so, then what’s the point of the ban,  if officers don’t have time to enforce it?

Let me know what you think.

While I am an ex-smoker & detest smoking while I am eating & do not want anyone to start smoking, I do not agree with the smoking ban in Greenville. I think that the smoking ban is an invasion of privacy as well as an invasion of privacy of the business owners in Greenville.  Business owners should be able to control what goes on within thei business establishments.  I agree with the 1987 smoking ban & think that it is sufficient.

i always try to sit in the non-smoking section in a restaurant. and there are some things that irritate me more than smoke. one example: someone blowing there nose while you are eating.
i think that more focus should be on those who are leaving the bars and restaurants under the influence of alcohol or drugs than those people who are lighting up a cigarette. something is sure wrong with the priorites of our lawmakers. they need to worry about enforcing the laws that are already in place.
also, are visitors from out of state or town (that don’t have a clue about this law) going to be fined the same as anyone else?

If the goverment would pay more attention to alcohol & drugs they would be better off. They are always talking about what smoking does. I’d rather take my chances with smoking than with the efects with the alcohol & drugs.

The point is to reduce the level of smoking in public you dolt. Hello, smoking is bad for you. Second hand smoke is bad for you. Even if the police don’t write any tickets it still discourages people from smoking in public. What did you think would happen? Police in riot gear clubbing smokers?

Cant you find any other newsworthy stories out there? Why are you so bent on beating dead horses.

While i believe smoking is wrong both morally AND in terms of your health, I believe that the new g-ville smoking bans are even worse. They are a violation of the constitution, and should never have been passed. If people don’t like the second-hand smoke at private establishments, then they should boycott and put pressure on the owners to make the establishments non-smoking. IF enough people were to boycott, it WOULD work. If it doesn’t work, it’s becausee there aren’t enough people getting up off their lazy tails (figuratively speaking) to do something about it. They want to sit back and whine at the government to handle all their problems. This is how forms of communism and dictatorship come into place. The Constitution begins with “We the People” not “We the few who are the only ones willing to do something about any problems therefore we’re going to push our agenda and make the people think we’re helping them.”
