Will DSS Take Away Overweight Boy?
By Amy Wood
Monday, March 26, 2007
A boy in Western North Carolina is severely overweight. He’s 7 years old and weighs 254 pounds. His mother told our Craig Beatty she’s been to doctor after doctor since she realized something wasn’t right when he was three years old. You can watch Craig’s story. It’s posted on our sister station’s website in the video playlist. And leave your comments below. I’ll see you on Your CW News at Ten.

Just because the child is overweight does not mean the mother does not love him and care for him. There are children living in alot worse a situations than that. This is absolutely rediculous in my opinion. It would probably be the worst thing anyone could do to that child and make things even worse to take him away from his mother. If he is being abused physically or is not being cared for then yes, you have a problem, otherwise, leave this family alone and let the mother work with Doctor’s to figure out what the problem is.
If Polk County DSS is so desparate for a case that they have to harass a loving mother who only wants the best for her son, maybe they should volunteer their services to a neighboring county. It is obvious to me, based on your story and the documentation that the mother provided that she is aware of the childs weight problem and has been trying to find a doctor to help her since the child was 2 1/2 years old. Putting this childs picture on the news is setting this child up for ridicule at school, and it is time that the Government mind their own business. I agree with the comments of another viewer, that there are children that do not have the home life that this young man has and those are the children that they need to be checking on. FYI….I DO NOT KNOW THIS FAMILY other than what I have seen on the news.
Who does DSS think they are? This is the scarriest thing I have ever heard of! What business is it of DSS that someone’s child is fat? This reminds me of Communist China. Would someone please tell DSS to mind their own business…they don’t have such a great track record taking care of children themselves, do they?
I think this station should get out of the way of DSS. It seems to me that they are the only one who cares for the child. The mother should have been seeking help for the child long ago, then maybe he wouldn’t have ended up in this situation. I don’t care what anyone says, this mother did not do her job. DSS is trying to save the child’s life! That is what they are supposed to do. They work for the best interest of the child. The mother allowing her son to get this fat is a type of abuse. He needs help and he needs it now! After watching your newscast last night, I was appalled that you would interfere with a situation like this one. You kept the lady from DSS from doing her job which is to save the child. As journalists, you should be aware that they have guidelines and would not interview on TV. I can’t believe there are so many people in favor of this mother. It is obvious to me that there is not a lot of healthy eating happening at that home. After seeing your newscast last night, I have decided not to tune in again. I hope this innocent child gets the help he so desperately needs and has a beautiful life!
IF THEY DO THIS IT IS PRETTY LOW EVEN FOR DSS. THEY LET CRACK HEADS KEEP THERE KIDS AND THEY DONT FEED THEIR KIDS. THE MOM IS PROBALY SCARED TO DEATH. WHAT WILL THE STATE DO STARVE HIM TO SUIT THEIR LIKINGS. MIND YOUR BUSINESS?? HOW MUCH DO THE DSS WORKERS HAVE TO WEIGH?? OR THEIR KIDS?? IF SO ALL THE ONES IN SPTBG WOULD BE FIRED??
