Twitter breaks the plane crash story

A young man named Keith Burtis using Twitter, was first to alert the world of the disaster unfolding in Western New York. 

He ran out to see what had happened.  And then he sent out this twitter message :  “Holy SXXX ! A small plane crashed into homes a couple miles from my house! Jet fuel is spilling into the streets!!!!“

This raw video was shot by a neighbor and quickly posted to You Tube and Twitter. I posted it around 1:30 this morning, on our news story.

More and more citizen journalists are playing a critical role covering the news.  You will always get there faster than we can.  You will always offer personal knowledge of the area and community, that a journalist won’t immediately have.  

Some in our business feel threatened by “citizen journalism.“  But not me.  What you can bring to the table compliments what we do.  It helps to complete the picture.  That’s why we have places for you to write stories and upload pictures and video on our website.
