Social Business: Schools get saavvy

The Spartanburg Day School has a science teacher that is one of the top bloggers and twitter users in the region.

And he’s proving it on the class trip to Washington DC. He’s sending back updates and pictures like this one on the steps of the Museum of Natural History.

Parents who’ve never heard of Twitter or Facebook are checking it out, as Sam Harrelson tweets his way through the nations capital with close to 40 8th graders.

It’s a trip of a lifetime and parents back in Spartanburg are able to track every move.
Twit Pics like this are coming back every couple of hours, showing the highlights, like this visit to Senator Lindsey Graham’s conference room.

Mr. Harrelson also has a Griffin Science blog site, where he chats with students when they are online, uploads podcasts reviewing some of the points he’s made in class, and encourages students to share cool science oriented You Tube videos on his “wall” that they can talk about in class.
He’s taking teaching to new levels forming connections with students that are comfortable and convenient. So we’ve made him our Social Business feature this week.
Know of other teachers taking this digital social media path in class?
Tell me about them! Post in the comments section.
