South Carolina’s worst flood remembered with new memorial
On June 6, 1903, the Pacolet River swelled to 40 feet, destroying 4 mills and the villages that went with them and killing at least 68 people. A statue that is built to the height the water reached was erected on E. Main Street Extension, which is 3.4 miles past Hillcrest Mall on the left, just before the Pacolet River Bridge in the Clifton area.
SEE the photo gallery, put together by Becky Pittman, from the dedication today and watch Gary Henderson’s interview below the pictures.
