Flooding Closes Parks In Asheville City
– January 25, 2010
Minor flooding has closed parks in Asheville along Amboy Road.
The Asheville Fire and Rescue Department says that the flooding occurred on Riverside Drive, below Westgate Bridge. Flooded areas have been blocked for public safety and citizens are urged to take precautions around flooded roadways. Fire officials say children should be kept away from drainage areas and culverts and caution is urged when walking near river banks.
:Most flood fatalities are the result of citizens driving into flooded streets,“ said Asheville Fire Chief Scott Burnette. “We want to remind drivers to avoid roadways covered with water.“
At 1 am, the French Broad River in Asheville was at 7.98 feet with a flood level of eight feet and the Swannanoa River in Biltmore was at 7.6 feet with a flood level of 12 feet. City officials say they will continue to monitor the level throughout today.
