VA Clinic Celebrates Grand Opening in Spartanburg
– January 25, 2010
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Veterans in Spartanburg will no longer have to travel to Greenville, Asheville or Augusta for many of their health services. On Monday, the Dorn V.A. Medical Center’s newest location celebrated its grand opening.
“There are a lot of people hurting,” says Vietnam Veteran John Lamendola. He says, “Veterans in the past have experienced a sense of shunning because of the fact that we have served and people aren’t in favor of the wars.“ Lamendola says Spartanburg’s new V.A. community based outpatient clinic is much needed in our area. “We don’t’ have to drive to Columbia for service, or all the way to Augusta, which is an older facility.“
The 13,000 square foot facility will serve Spartanburg, Cherokee, Union, Polk and Rutherford Counties. Lamendola looks forward to transferring his benefits to the Upstate, saying “Just arriving three years ago from California, friends suggested I don’t sign up for the system within south Carolina; and so I signed up in Asheville, north Carolina; so I’m transferring back as a matter of fact, just because of this facility here, because it’s so close to the house and so well equipped.“
The clinic is located on North Grove Medical Park Drive in Spartanburg. The facility opened in the fall and has 7 exam rooms and 15 employees. New services in the future will include a lab, home-based primary care, and expanded mental health services.

COMMENTS
I am so glad that the Veterans Administration built the new clinic the Spartanburg area. I am an older veteran of the USAF, and am now a diabetic, and disabled vet. due to Service rated disability. Driving distances is difficult for me due to visual problems. This made it impossible to drive to Columbia or Greenville without having to have my wife drive me.
I often have had to change the appointments set for me because my wife was still employed, or had appointments herself.
I am able to drive short distances, so this new clinic is a big asset to have in our community
