Greenville Man Crushed and Killed Working on Car

In his 64 years, his family says Steve Poe was really one of a kind: as a husband, father, and friend. “Whatever anyone wanted, he was willing to help with,” says Poe’s son, Kevin. It was only fitting that the grandfather’s passion was unique, too. He treasured a pair of 65 Chevy Corveres, that he built and bonded over with his oldest son. “We spent many many hours playing with cars in the garage.”
That’s where the 64 year old was Sunday, getting a car ready for an upcoming show, when the unthinkable happened. Poe’s wife, Pat, says he was fixing a transmission leak, when she came outside and found him crushed underneath the car. Neighbors rushed to help and call 911, but it was too late. It was a freak accident, his son says, Poe was always prepared for. “Definitely not something I would have ever imagined, because he was always so careful, making sure the car was secure when he was working on it.”
They know he died doing what he loved, but unlike his hobby, can never be replaced. “He was a great guy.”
Funeral services are planned for Thursday.
