Weekend Lane Closures Announced For I-585 In Spartanburg

Posted: Updated:
SPARTANBURG, S.C -

North and southbound lanes on Interstate 585 will see closures throughout the weekend and into Monday. The closings are as follows: July 28 and 29 from approximately 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., June 30 and July 1 from approximately 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The lane closures come as repairs begin on the California Avenue bridge over I-585, which was damaged in a collision in January of this year.

An 18-wheeler carrying a "cherry picker" vehicle caused damage to the California Avenue bridge. They say the cherry picker was all the way down, but the load was higher than the maximum 13'10" requirement.

One section of the bridge was completely removed after the accident and the overpass has been closed since.

The SC Department of Transportation planned to replace the bridge September 2014, but will replace it sooner now, because of the accident. The new plan calls for a higher, 17ft clearance, and wider lanes on top of the bridge.
