My Argentine Connection - The Paris of South America

The neighborhood where “Maria” Governor Mark Sanford’s mistress lives is Buenos Aires’ finest.  I know, because I lived in Palermo within blocks of the apartment now being staked out by hundreds of journalists.

“Maria” (video here) reportedly lives on Republica de la India which is just off the main road that is like the Central Park of New York, and it’s in an area of the city, where most of the Embassy’s are located.
Here is a shot from an apartment advertised as being on the “exclusive street” Republica De La India.

It sits across from the Buenos Aires Zoo.  The red dot on the map below shows you the area.

While I was studying abroad in Argentina in 1986-87 I lived with a family off Avenue Del Libertador just across from the cities most beautiful park, with paddle boats and amazing views of the Rio De la Plata.

Buenos Aires is a VERY sophisticated city.  It’s the Europe of South America influenced heavily by Italians Germans and Spaniards who immigrated there doubling the population after each world war.  Read more about immigration to Argentina here.

It is a HUGE city!  New York is 18 million in the metro area.  Buenos Aires is 13 million.

Argentinians speak a special style of Spanish called Castellano - heavily influenced by Italian.  Read more about it here.

Buenos Aires is a magical place.  A city you’ll never forget, once you’ve been there.  And that’s saying a lot when you consider you have to take a 10 and a half hour flight!  And that’s just the Atlanta to BA direct flight.  Back in my college days, I was in Washington.  So we flew DC to Miami, Miami to Rio, Rio to Buenos Aires.  It was almost 24 hours of travel counting layovers.

Just a little perspective from my 3 months in the what many call “The Paris of South America.”

This video is an quirky interview from You Tube in the Palermo Area, labled in this video as the “chic hangout for Argentina’s rich and famous.”
