Posting while preaching

Boy do I know how to accidentally stir up a conversation! You have VERY strong opinions about Twittering during church.

From the moment I got on Twitter more than a year ago, I noticed two things locally.  The most prominent users of Twitter were local real estate agents and local pastors and churches!

Tuesday night on News Channel 7 at 10 on CW we are airing a story about a congregation in Seattle where they are encouraged to send out Tweets (Twitter messages) about what the pastor is preaching, during the sermon.  The concept is to spread the message to more eyes.

No sooner did I send out messages on Facebook and Twitter asking what you thought than I was contacted by local churches which already do this.  And have for some time. Chad Bowen is the pastor at Metamorphosis church and posted on my Facebook wall.

“In my opinion, twittering points about parts of the message that had an impact on you is no different than taking notes on the same thing. By twittering it, you have the opportunity to share and hopefully it will impact someone else,” Bowen posts.

And he continues, ” I believe that God has given us tools to share His message in a way that we never have been able to before. It is our responsiblity to make use of them.”

Dozens have responded saying you can’t take in the sermon and publicize it at the same time.  They find it disrespectful and rude.

But one of my Twitter followers actually found her local church, from a “Tweet.”

She might have missed out on encountering God, in as powerful and convincing a way,  without it.

So where do you stand?
