Teens and Texting how to stop them

A teen in Asheville died driving this week, and Friday we learned she was trying to look at a text message when it happened.

As a mom with a soon to be driving teen, stories like this break my heart, and frighten me.  So what can we do to stop kids from texting and driving?

We know teens text more than talk. Study after study confirms it.  So do our cell phone bills.

And just this month we learned nighttime driving accidents involving teens are up in yet another disturbing study that blames texting.

CNN featured two apps on the news this afternoon that I wanted to share with you.  One called Textecution is for the Android phone.  It lets you set things up to keep teens from texting when a car is moving more than 10 mph.  It’s only $1.99.

The other is 24.99 with a 9.99 fee each month.  It offers some attractive features.  No matter how fast you are going you can always call 911 and you can program in up to three other numbers that are always reachable (like maybe mom and dad).  It also lets you limit texting by time and location.  So if you don’t want them texting after a certain time at night or if you don’t want them texting at school, you can control it.

So would you use this kind of technology?  Let me know in the comments.

Here’s a link to learn more about the apps.
